Cyanide & Chemical Resistance in Gold Leaching Environments

No processing environment is more corrosive than an operating gold plant. Sodium cyanide (HCN), lime slurry, acidic process water and abrasive gold-bearing ore attack unprotected steel surfaces continuously, 24 hours a day, every day the plant runs.

As part of gold processing plant maintenance specialists, our protective coating teams work exclusively within the gold mining sector. Every system we specify is matched to the precise chemical threats present in Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) and heap leach operations, not selected from a generic industrial product guide.

Our protective coatings are integral components of our comprehensive wear protection systems for gold mines, forming the chemical defence layer that works alongside rubber lining and ceramic wear protection to eliminate unplanned downtime across the processing circuit.

  • Novolac epoxy systems for full cyanide (HCN) immersion service
  • Lime slurry resistant coatings for leach circuit infrastructure
  • High-build epoxy for CIL/CIP tank internals and launders
  • Acid-resistant linings for acidic process water zones
  • Chemical-resistant coatings for elution circuits and reagent areas
  • Full surface preparation to AS/NZS 1627 prior to all applications

Understanding the Threat Environment

What Gold Plant Coatings Must Withstand

Selecting the wrong coating system for a gold processing facility is an expensive mistake. The chemical environment in an active gold plant is highly specific, and it demands coatings that are specified with that environment in mind from the outset.

Sodium Cyanide (HCN)

The primary leaching reagent in gold processing, cyanide solutions attack standard epoxy systems over time, causing delamination and substrate corrosion. Novolac epoxy systems are required for full immersion cyanide service in CIL and CIP tank internals.

Lime Slurry

Hydrated lime is used extensively throughout gold processing to control pH. Lime slurry is highly alkaline and abrasive, standard coatings blister and fail rapidly. Specialised high-pH resistant systems are required for launders, tanks and pipework in lime contact.

Acidic Process Water

Acid washing of carbon in elution circuits and acidic tailings water creates localised low-pH environments that demand acid-resistant coating systems on all contact surfaces, including pump boxes, sumps and containment structures.

Slurry Abrasion

Gold-bearing slurry contains fine abrasive ore particles that erode coating surfaces through constant contact. In high-velocity zones such as pump discharges, cyclone feeds and transfer chutes, ceramic-filled epoxy systems provide the wear resistance standard coatings cannot.

Where We Apply Protective Coatings

Protecting Gold Processing Infrastructure Across the Circuit

From leach tanks to tailings infrastructure, every asset in a gold processing facility is exposed to chemical or abrasive attack. We provide the right protective coating system for each zone.

CIL & CIP Tank Internals

Novolac epoxy lining systems applied to the full internal surface of Carbon-in-Leach and Carbon-in-Pulp tanks, providing long-term resistance to sodium cyanide solution contact and abrasive slurry.

Launders & Leach Circuits

High-build chemical resistant coatings for launders, leach feed boxes and associated leach circuit steelwork, protecting against lime slurry and cyanide solution contact in continuous wet service.

Elution Circuits & Reagent Areas

Acid and caustic resistant coating systems for elution columns, acid wash vessels, strip circuits and reagent storage and dosing areas where pH extremes are present in daily operation.

Pump Boxes & Sumps

Ceramic-filled epoxy and high-build polyurethane coatings for pump boxes, sumps and wet-area steelwork handling abrasive gold slurry and cyanide process water at high flow velocities.

Structural Steel & Platforms

Zinc-rich primer and high-build epoxy topcoat systems for structural steelwork, walkways and plant platforms, preventing corrosion in the humid, cyanide-saturated atmosphere of an operating gold plant.

Tailings Infrastructure

Protective coatings for tailings storage facility pipelines, pump stations and containment bunds operating in highly abrasive, chemically aggressive tailings slurry environments.

Our Application Process

Extending Asset Life in WA & Queensland Goldfields

Operating in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields and Queensland gold operations demands a disciplined coating application process. Coating longevity in gold plant service depends entirely on what happens before the first coat is applied.

01

Chemical Exposure Assessment

We identify the specific chemical threats at each asset, cyanide concentration, pH range, lime contact, before specifying any coating system.

02

System Specification

The correct coating system is selected based on actual service conditions, novolac epoxy, ceramic-filled epoxy, polyurethane or zinc-rich primer systems as required.

03

Surface Preparation

Abrasive blasting to SA2.5 or SA3 standard with profile testing, the single most critical factor in achieving the coating adhesion required for gold plant service life.

04

Application & QA Sign-Off

Application by our own qualified teams to manufacturer specification, with DFT testing, holiday detection and full quality documentation before handback.

Integrated Wear Protection

Coatings Are Part of a Complete System

Protective coatings address chemical attack and moderate abrasion. For a total wear management strategy across a gold processing facility, they work alongside complementary protection systems.

Our comprehensive wear protection systems for gold mines combine protective coatings with heavy-duty physical protection for a complete circuit-wide solution:

Gold Plant Ceramic Wear Lining

High-density alumina ceramic tiles for extreme impact and abrasion zones, cyclone feeds, discharge chutes and high-velocity transfer points where coatings alone cannot provide sufficient protection.

Gold Slurry Pipe & Rubber Lining

Cold bonded rubber lining for pipework, pump boxes and launders handling gold-bearing slurry, providing heavy-duty impact and abrasion protection that completes the total Gold Mine Wear Protection System.
